Georgia Radio Reading Service (GaRRS) participates in the first nationwide EAS Test
The Georgia Radio Reading Service (GaRRS), a radio station for the blind, visually impaired and print disabled communities in Georgia, will join the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Shepherd Center and WABE 90.1 FM on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. in the first nationwide test of the National Emergency Alert System broadcast. According to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the purpose of the test is to assess the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a way to alert the public of national emergencies.
Several GaRRS listeners and others will gather to listen to the signal on radio and television and then provide feedback as to the effectiveness of the EAS signal for people with disabilities through a follow up focus group session. The feedback will be provided to the FCC.
GaRRS, Shepherd Center, WABE and the Georgia Institute of Technology are partnering agencies on the Wireless RERC (Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center). The mission of the Wireless RERC is to promote equitable access to and use of wireless technologies by people with disabilities and encourage the adoption of Universal Design in future generations of wireless devices and applications.
